1953 - MG TD
Original Steering Wheel
Had a couple of hours to kill, so thought i would play with the old wheel...
The plastic on old MG T wheels shrinks and cracks with age...the rod through the center of the rim rusts, however, the plastic is on there like iron... took over an hour to cut, chisel, acetone, saw, hammer, etc off.
Removed all of this in 1" or so pieces at first..finally took it to the band saw and cut the outside edge of the plastic as close to the steel rod as I could, then found you could sort of "twist" it off with pliers... still took forever...
Finally got it all off and cleaned up on a wire wheel....
Thought I would see what the stock hub looked like polished...went through the same process as the Nardi wheel...
(2 hours first day)
Finished sanding with 800...the rear edge in now round as well...
(2 hours 8th day)
A few coats of finish on it....the mahogany is much lighter then the Nardi wheel, but I assume will darken with age... does darken with each coat of tung oil...
It now has about 30 or so coats of Tung Oil... the finish is as nice as I have seen with lacquer or varnish.....
(Total time - 15 hours)
